Why should I do my treatment with an orthodontist?

As a general dentist, you can carry out most types of dental treatment. In the basic education at dental schools, only a small part of education in orthodontics is included. Some dentists market themselves as specialists in a certain treatment technique (for example Invisalign), but this should not be confused with being a specialist dentist. A specialist dentist in Orthodontics has, in addition to a dental degree, also undergone specialist training with at least three years of additional training in orthodontics. The education is strictly regulated and the degree is issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare. It requires a large number of treated patients with a wide variety of bite abnormalities together with a greater number of training in biomechanics, periodontology, bite physiology, maxillofacial orthopedics, research methodology and genetics. Every patient is unique. There is no single treatment technique that works for everyone. An orthodontist is used to working with a wide variety of techniques to achieve the best and most durable treatment result.

How much does a treatment cost?

The price for a treatment depends on the degree of severity, treatment time and which materials are used. Contact us for a consultation and we will tell you more.

How long is a treatment?

The treatment time varies greatly between different types of treatment. Usually a treatment is 1-2 years but in some cases up to 3 years. Are there any risks with braces? Shorter roots. During treatment with braces, the roots of the teeth (mainly the front teeth in the upper jaw) become approx. 1mm shorter. It is nothing that is neither felt, seen nor has any impact on the survival of the teeth. In some cases, even shorter roots can be obtained. It may be because you do not tolerate braces as well as others and may be hereditary. It is very rare that a shorter tooth root causes any permanent problems. That a tooth does not survive. This can occur if you have had an injury (trauma) to a tooth or if you have a congenital injury to a tooth. Usually, the tooth then needs a root canal and can then continue to be moved. However, you can count on a longer treatment time and a cost for the root canal treatment. It is very rare that a tooth needs to be removed because it does not survive braces treatment. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to see in advance whether a tooth is damaged or not. Higher risk of caries. Treatment with braces gives you a higher risk of cavities. If you do not take care of your teeth properly, there is an increased risk of so-called white spots that form around the metal brackets and are visible when you remove the braces. They cannot be polished off. It is therefore very important to have good oral hygiene and good dietary habits during the treatment. Gingival retraction. This means that the gums recede on the front of the teeth. The most common is that it occurs on the front teeth in the lower jaw. If the retraction is extensive, the tooth may get less support in the bone.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a braces system that is made up of a series of transparent rails that are replaced at regular intervals during the course of the treatment. The plastic rails are individually adapted and move the teeth step by step to the desired position. Invisalign is also a very flexible orthodontic method as the braces can be taken out for shorter periods of time, for example during meals or meetings. An Invisalign treatment is a good option as it can be adapted to your needs. Many patients who previously refrained from orthodontics have access to flexible and more discreet braces with Invisalign. However, it is important to emphasize that Invisalign is not a finished product that gives the same results regardless of the treating dentist.
